Embracing Neurodivergence: Unconventional Paths to Success
Every journey to self-discovery is unique, and mine began with my children. Advocating for them and their needs led me to start a charity dedicated to supporting SEND families. Little did I know that in raising awareness for them, I would also raise awareness for myself. As an undiagnosed AuDHD woman, I could empathise on a deeper level with their experiences because I had felt similar struggles. This realisation fuelled my passion for advocacy, pushing me to break down barriers and challenge societal misconceptions.
In this blog post, I want to share my story of resilience, growth, and embracing neurodivergence, demonstrating that success can be achieved through unconventional paths.
Breaking Barriers and Making a Difference:
Through my work as an advocate and model, I've had the privilege of meeting influential figures and campaigning for increased support and resources for SEND families. Speaking at assemblies and organising campaigns, we successfully secured funding, making a tangible difference. As a model, both my child, Chayce, and I have been at the forefront of campaigns celebrating diversity and inclusion. Our role extends beyond modelling, as we work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure support and reasonable adjustments for all individuals.
Embracing Strengths and Overcoming Challenges:
Before my late diagnosis, I struggled with my strengths, perceiving them as challenges in a world that didn't understand or accommodate neurodivergent individuals like myself. However, with newfound self-awareness and acceptance, I turned the narrative around. Embracing my unique mind, I celebrate my strengths and differences. This shift in perspective has been life-changing, empowering me to pursue my passions and make a positive impact.
The Power of Creativity and Aesthetics:
Aesthetics, fashion, interior design, and all things creative have always been my special interests. Leveraging my creativity has allowed me to bring a fresh perspective to my work and make meaningful contributions. It's a testament to the value of embracing one's natural inclinations and talents.
Celebrating Achievements and Shifting Perspectives:
Growing up, celebrating achievements was often discouraged. However, I've realised the importance of recognising and sharing our accomplishments. By teaching my children to be humble yet proud of their achievements, I foster confidence and self-belief. It's crucial to shift the narrative around success and create a culture of celebration and inspiration. By supporting and collaborating with one another, we can unlock even greater potential.
Confidence in Being Yourself and Celebrating Diversity:
One of the greatest challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals is the fear of judgment, fuelled by stereotypes, stigma, and misinformation. It is crucial to break free from this fear and have confidence in being oneself. Neurodivergent conditions are a natural part of the diverse human experience, with a significant percentage of the population falling under this category. By celebrating our neurodivergent traits, we contribute to a society that recognises and embraces the richness of diversity.
Tips for Success as a Neurodivergent Adult:
- Focus on your strengths and find opportunities that allow you to utilise them fully.
- Surround yourself with a supportive team that complements your abilities and encourages growth.
- Advocate for your needs and seek support from others who can help amplify your voice.
- Celebrate your successes and embrace the power of positive self-reflection.
- Build a community of like-minded individuals who understand your journey and provide valuable insights and support.
In Conclusion:
My journey of self-discovery and embracing neurodivergence has been filled with challenges, vulnerability, and personal growth. From advocating for my children to founding a charity, from meeting with influential figures to successful modelling campaigns, my experiences have shaped my understanding of success and the power of embracing our differences. By celebrating our achievements, focusing on our strengths, having confidence in being ourselves, and celebrating the diversity of neurodivergent individuals, we can create a world that values and uplifts everyone, regardless of their unique neurological traits.
